Senator Lyn Allison
2008 Australian Humanist of the Year
Senator Lyn Allison has been awarded the Council of Australian Humanist Societies annual Australian Humanist of the Year Award.
Each year the council acknowledges a high profile Australian whose work is in keeping with humanist ideals. Senator Allison was selected in recognition of her work in the Senate, in particular negotiating improvements to legislation and securing funding for a number of programs to protect the environment and support education.
The Council of Australian Humanists says "Senator Allison's respect and understanding of the democratic process, her support of and continual reference to the secular nature of our society, along with her reasoned and clear headed approach in dealing with a wide range of issues shows her to be an exemplary individual and a true Humanist".
Senator Allison was greatly surprised and pleased to receive the award. In her acceptance speech on Saturday 3rd May she offered her own take on humanism, which she regards as defending the right to be fully human, and how this has influenced her work during her 12 years in the Senate.
